Puppy Program At Stalworth Kennels we have developed our own formal Puppy Program. This program was developed in order to offer our puppies and young adult dogs the greatest possible advantage for successful futures as working dogs. Dogs graduating the Puppy Program at Stalworth Kennels are highly socialized individuals. They will have been started in all phases of sport or have been imprinted and started into various phases of working (as applicable for law enforcement, Search and Rescue, scent detection, etc). At a glance, here is what Level 1 of our puppy program covers (this program is always evolving and may be modified at any time):
Basic Training - Level 1: Socialization: 1. Playing with other dogs 2. Accustomed to cats and other animals (indifferent or sociable) 3. Comfortable with children (all ages) 4. Comfortable around people with wheelchairs, canes, crutches, helmets, etc 5. Crate training (started) 6. Climbing up/down stairs 7. Traveling in vehicle 8. Umbrella opening (indifferent to, or curious) 9. Gunfire (indifferent to, or curious) 10. Noise maker such as can or bottle filled with rocks (indifferent to, or curious) 11. Going through busy public places (indifferent to city traffic, greet strangers happily, etc) 12. Going through stores, malls, or other public buildings 13. Walking with confidence on slippery and uneven surfaces 14. Swimming (shallow / still water) 15. Riding on row and/or power boats (if seasonally available) 16. Confident at vet’s office (allows vet to look in ears, mouth, check teeth, touch paws, give full physical exam, etc…) Obedience: 1. Sit 2. Down 3. Stand 4. Heel 5. Recall 6. Look / focus / eye contact 7. Wait Scenting: 1. Scent imprinting (cadaver, ammunitions, accelerants, explosives, narcotics, etc) - working prospects only. 2. Tracking (scent pads and foundational puppy tracks are started with food) 3. Search for food (hidden under bucket, box, tire, crate, etc) 4. Search for ball or toy (hidden under bucket, box, tire, crate, etc) 5. Introduction to Area & Building searches (searching for handler, food, ball or toy) Protection: 1. Baby bite work (biting on rags, puppy tugs, soft toys, old clothing, etc) 2. Puppies should attend training field regularly 3. As pups progress; baby bite work can and should be done in variety of locations (ie: on/off training field, on different surfaces, indoor/outdoor, different level distractions, etc) Remember; NEVER do bite work while puppies are teething (pain is a great deterrent)!!
